north wales blues and soul festival buy tickets blog midsummer artists blog faq venue camping sponsors contact en english cymraeg dropdown example menu example menu example menu 3rd - 5th august 2018 mold, north wales coming in august 2018! another three days of fantastic blues and soul music. an incredible line up of the best in blues and soul. set right in the heart of mold. don't worry about the weather, we have two huge roofs to protect everyone rain or shine! buy tickets we've teamed up with uk charity music for all here, at the north wales blues and soul festival hq, we love live music! more needs to be done to support young people in learning to play a musical instrument, otherwise music education risks becoming something that only children born to wealthier parents can afford. so we have are backing the national music for all charity. it provides instruments and lessons for young people who wish to learn – or keep playing – but cannot afford to do so. there have been some government support packages but the reality is that austerity and education funding cuts bite harder in some regions than others. we want to do our bit to provide practical support and hopefully also some inspiration to young people. our audience is made up from people from all over the world but the mainstay comes from wales, the north west and the midlands. these are places which have produced some of the world’s most influential musicians, from the beatles, led zeppelin, joy division right up to the stereophonics today. we are music people and not politicians but do think it would be wrong to assume that our music heritage can just take care of itself. there is definitely a debate to be had around whether there is enough funding focussed on disadvantaged learners. playing a musical instrument is life enhancing – and sometimes even life changing – but it’s getting out of reach for a growing number of children. the festival will raise funds for the charity by donating a percentage from ticket sales and having ‘bucket-shaking’ fundraisers among the crowds over the weekend. we are also arranging for award-winning harmonica player liam ward, who is performing at the festival, to run a harmonica workshop in mold for young people interested in taking up the instrument. there will also be a ‘battle of the bands’ competition prior to the big event, we are encouraging entries from schools from across flintshire. paul mcmanus, chief executive of music for all is delighted to be working with the north wales blues & soul festival: "making music really changes lives and it also has a huge range of benefits for younger people. research shows that playing a musical instrument can help at school with better concentration, creativity and socialisation, leading to improved self-esteem and self-discipline. we want as many children as possible to enjoy these benefits and the support of events like the festival really help us to make this happen". as a mark of respect, this year the main stage has been named in honour of clem curtis. clem was an old friend of the festival, appearing here in 2015 and bringing a raucous response to hits such as build me up, buttercup, baby now that i’ve found you and any old time (you're lonely and sad). the foundations broke new ground, both musically and culturally, in the 1960s. they were the first multi-racial british band to make headway in the charts, with white british, caribbean and sri lankan members making their rich sound – and clem’s distinctive vocal style – accessible to all. baby now that i’ve found you made #1 in the uk charts while build me up, buttercup made it to #2 in the uk in 1967; their upbeat, melodious tunes successfully imitating and building upon those which were rapidly evolving through the iconic tamla motown formula. clem came to the attention of the north wales blues & soul festival through one of its principal organisers, charlie broadhurst of event sound. “i started working with clem in 2010 after engineering his band at a david gest soul concert in liverpool. clem was an absolute joy to work with; he had a truly amazing voice and stage presence. i miss him very much” it is an honour and privilege to have had such a soul legend associated with this event and it is with pride that we name our stage in his memory. god bless you clem curtis … and thank you! what was it like? take a look through some of the video clips of the live performances from previous years previous years have featured acts such as: doug macleod, aynsley lister, laurence jones, connie lush, king king, david sinclair 4, the foundations, liam ward band, alex mckown, tom attah & the bad man clan, midnite johnny, rebecca downes band, born healer, the brothers groove, matt wolff band, rita payne, babajack and many more! here are some of the lovely things people have said about the festival... liam ward & benjamin bassford the liam ward band are known for originals that push blues boundaries, bringing you some of the freshest british blues on offer. one of the uk’s most revered harmonica players, vocalist and harp player liam ward is a winner of the national harmonica league player of the year. the revolutionaires established within the ‘hotbed’ of the north east music scene in the uk, they power out jumpin’ hot rhythm & blues in their own indomitable hard hitting style. primarily, they are influenced by 1940’s and 1950’s r&b.; in particular, louis jordan, big joe turner, little richard, chuck berry and roy brown. however, they have adopted a harder and more aggressive approach, synonymous with modern blues artists such as stevie ray vaughan, duke robillard, jools holland and mike henderson which helps create their own high energy sound. over the last decade the revolutionaires have established themselves on the uk and european rockin’ circuit, as well as the blues scene. chris king robinson in 2011 chris was awarded the accolade of being one of the top undiscovered guitarists worldwide by the acclaimed international music photographer robert knight; who in partnership with guitar manufacturer fender was searching the globe to find the next great guitarist. in 2013, chris’ online popularity began to soar, after gaining millions of hits on youtube he quickly established himself as twitter’s most followed blues guitarist worldwide, such interest encouraged chris to self-produce and release his first single: ‘lipstick on her cigar’. the single hit no.1 on the itunes & amazon blues charts, after just one day of sales. in 2014, huge public demand for live performances led chris to form his own 4-piece group: ‘the chris king robinson band’ which quickly gained recognition as one of the most exciting live bands in the country. dale storr dale's passion for new orleans music saw him perform his debut theatre gig as a soloist, concentrating on the new orleans piano styles. the success of that performance led to further dates and dale has not looked back since. dale's ambition has always been to play the music of new orleans, which can be anything from a classically influenced minuet, a latin rhumba, a back o' town junker blues to a frenzied boogie woogie. greg coulson just 25 years old, greg is already an accomplished and highly respected musician with a track record including lengthy spells in the legendary two tone/ska band the selecter and in the west end. greg has his own special, fiery, impassioned brand of rhythm & blues, putting his own stamp on the music of the greats who inspire him, reminding people of all ages of why this music once dominated the world. while greg is well known for his livewire on-stage performances, he could not make the impact he does without his stunning, hand-picked band of crack musicians who help him rock any house he appears in. with a first album of original music lined up for a 2017 release, why not be among the first to hear of greg's new songs? brilleaux brilleaux is a high-energy, hard driving, british-style rhythm and blues band from new zealand in the style of bands such as dr feelgood, wilko johnson, and nine below zero, and in a similar vein to earlier exponents of the genre such as the yardbirds, early rolling stones, and johnny kid and the pirates. brilleaux currently have 8 albums under their belts! a typical set by brilleaux consists of a mixture of british r&b; classics and exciting original material that these masters of rhythm and blues have been performing at festivals around the country since 1999. there is nobody in new zealand playing rhythm and blues like these guys!
